Is the hype around social media reaching a frenzy point? More than 90% of marketing departments intend to launch a social media campaign as part of their external communications in 2008, according to research done by Lewis PR.
Seventy five per cent also claimed they were going to use a blog in their communication plan, according to the report – up 50% on last year. However, a quarter of firms are not now setting aside a budget for their new media projects but by 2009, as many as two-thirds plan to set aside at least 25% of their budgets for social media efforts.
This survey was carried out with 150 marketing, communications and media executives. What do you think?

[...] Ninety per cent of marketers want to launch social media projectsSurvey from Lewis PR shows enthusiasm for social media also shows a fair amount of reluctance among marketers too. I think it’s ludicrous. The idea that a tactic should drive communications strategy is inane as, in this instance as an example, there are a vast number of products and services about/for which people have absolutely no need to be ’social.’ Talk about a trend that delivers full-employment for digital marketing firms! I recently explored the social media experience at Kleenex tissue, and wrote an essay about it entitled “A Virtual Sneeze,” at http://dimbulb.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/07/a-virtual-sneez.html. Check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks!
