ITV plans pop-up ads in television shows?

We had to have a little check that the date wasn’t April 1st when someone sent this story into us..apparently ITV are potentially planning to introduce pop-up advertising on ‘blank’ screen space during TV shows. You can read all about this here.

Now, we’re all aware that media owners need to get really savvy in an industry where audiences are fragmenting and brand owners just aren’t ploughing all their cash into TV spots. But could this idea really work?

The article says that: “…..technology, called “automatically placed overlay advertising “, uses computer algorithms to search for the space on video footage, such as blue sky or blank walls.” It adds: “The technique is being tested in news footage on the ITV Local website. If successful, it could be introduced to mainstream programmes.”

But hold on a minute! Isn’t pop-up advertising falling out of favour online because it’s so intrusive to people’s habits? Why would you start introducing it to TV screens? We know that various companies are looking for ways to introduce clickable products in TV programmes so that viewers can choose a product while watching a show (which will become easier as the TV screen and internet come closer togeter)  but this seems to be a case of slotting in ads in quite an unusual way.

What do you think of this plan? We’re not convinced….

i hate pop ups, especially on tv. i’ve noticed several networks have already started doing pop up ads that cover up half the screen in the middle of a show you are watching(networks such as spiketv, tnt). i let each of them know where they can stick their pop ups and that i would never watch or buy anything that was promoted in this manner.

I want a pop-up blocker for my TV! Last night there was a pop-up ad that took up 1/3 of the TV screen. It was advertising a show it had just advertised during the commercial. Can these people be so stupid that they have seen pop-up blockers for web sites because pop-ups are so annoying and, yet, they think it is a good idea for a pop-up ad on TV. Think people!
